Height & Measurement
The 8,848m height is officially approved by China and Nepal. In 1856, Everest was announced as 8,840m high, then after years calculations, an Indian survey had update the new data of 8,848m in 1955. The data was later reaffirmed of 8,848.13 by Chinese measurement in 1975.
On Oct. 9th, 2005, after numerous months of calculation and measurement, the Chinese National Bureau of Surveying and Mapping and Chinese Academy of Science authoritatively stated the height of Everest as 8,844.43 with accuracy of ±0.21 m. The height is based on the actual highest point of rock without ice and snow covering on it. The Chinese team also calculated the ice depth of 3.5m, which correspond the elevation of 8,848m.
Climbers & Troubles
Due to its special geographic location and features, Mount Everest attracts numerous mountaineers every year. There are two main routes: one is to the southeast summit from Nepal, the other is to the north summit from Tibet. For decades, Mt. Everest has been a challenging place, even for professional climbers. One of the concerns is the frequent occurrence of the high-speed winds while the other concerns include the altitude sickness caused by rare atmosphere pressure.
