Saga Dawa Festival Tour for year 2021 is in May. So we will begin the tour at Lhasa and head to Mt. Kailash to see the Saga Dawa ceremony on the 9th of June. The 9th of June is April 15th in Tibetan calendar. And it is the Buddha, Sakyamuni’s birthday, the day of Nirvana and Parinirvana. So Tibetan people, especially Buddhists consider this date as the most important date. Therefore, they will celebrate the festival by doing koras, going to temples and giving things to the poor.
Celebration in Mt. Kailash for Saga Dawa Festival Tour
There is a big ceremony in Darchen, the footstep of Mt. Kailash. For example, on 9th of June, the full moon date, people will gather in Tarpoche to hang prayer flags to the prayer flag pole. After that, they will erect the new prayer flag pole. Also, lamas play the long trumpet to welcome the replacement and read prayers. Meanwhile, it is the first day of Mt. Kailash trekking. So you can trek from Darchen to Tarpoche to witness the solemn moment of Saga Dawa celebration. And we will end up in Dira-puk Monastery for the first trekking day.
